Staring at a Blank Wall? How to Know What to Commission for Your Space

We have all looked at a massive, empty wall in our home or business and thought, “This place needs a mural.”

But right after that spark of excitement, the panic sets in. A mural is a permanent commitment, and most clients simply don’t know how to figure out what the artwork should actually look like.

If you are stuck in that “blank wall paralysis,” you don’t need a perfect artistic blueprint to reach out to us. You only need to look at three simple things to get started.

1. Forget the Visuals. How Should the Room Feel?

When we collaborate, we never start by asking, “What do you want us to draw?” Instead, ask yourself: When someone walks through that door, what is the very first emotion I want them to experience?

If it’s a bustling cafe, maybe you want a jolt of high-contrast energy. If it’s a wellness studio, you want a sanctuary that lowers the heart rate. Once you give us the emotional goal, our job as artists is to translate that feeling into the right shapes and colors.

2. Look at How People Move Through the Space

A great mural interacts with a room’s natural architecture and daily life. Think about the traffic flow.

Is this a feature wall behind a couch or a reception desk that people only see as they pass through? If so, we can go incredibly bold, dynamic, and intricate.

But if this wall sits directly opposite a dining table or an office desk where you will stare at it for hours, you need breathing room. For those spaces, we design subtle textures, calming gradients, or organic lines that give your eyes a place to rest.

3. You Don’t Need a Drawing, You Just Need a “Hard No”

The most common phrase we hear is, “I’m just not creative, so I don’t know how to explain what I want.”

You don’t need to be creative; that’s why you’re hiring us. To start a commission, we only need your boundaries:

Your Likes: Show us a few random images you naturally gravitate toward, a textile pattern, a movie color palette, or a general vibe.

Your Dislikes: Tell us what you absolutely hate. If you despise the color purple, or if sharp geometric shapes make you anxious, let us know.

Knowing your “hard no’s” gives us the perfect guardrails to design something completely original that you are guaranteed to love.

Your space has a story to tell. Let’s figure out how to paint it.
